Second-generation cephalosporin antibiotics, a key clinical drug. Cefuroxime tablets are suitable for children with pharyngitis or tonsillitis, acute otitis media, and impetigo, etc. The activity against Gram-positive cocci is similar or slightly lower than that of the first-generation cephalosporins, but it is quite stable against staphylococcus and gram-negative bacilli producing beta-lactamase. Besides Staphylococcus aureus, other positive cocci (including anaerobic cocci) are sensitive to this drug. The antibacterial activity of cefuroxime against Staphylococcus aureus is inferior to that of cefazolin.
