Mezlocillin sodium is a new semisynthetic penicillin. In the previous literature, the highly toxic phosgene was used as the reactant in the synthesis process. Acylurea penicillin mezlocillin sodium was synthesized from 2-imidazolidinone via four steps of methanesulfonylation and acylation. The synthesis process of l-chloroformyl-3-methanesulfonyl-2-imidazolidinone, an important intermediate of l-chloroformyl-3-methanesulfonyl-2-imidazolidinone, was improved by using trichloromethyl chloroformate instead of phosgene, the yield also increased from 70% to 75% .
